Skin needs moisture to survive and heal

The scalp is similar to the skin on your face; after cleansing, you need to moisturise. The conditioner, much like a moisturiser, is designed to replenish moisture lost by using a shampoo during the cleansing of the scalp. If you do not use a conditioner, you may develop dry or flaky skin, known as dandruff. Sometimes, when the scalp is not conditioned properly, the oil glands in your scalp work harder to prevent dandruff and moisturise itself, leading to an oily scalp. Using a conditioner means the oil glands in your scalp won't have to work as hard to prevent dandruff and will help maintain good moisture levels in your scalp.

Hairdressers often advise against applying conditioner on the scalp, suggesting it should only be used on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. This advice helps create volume at the roots when styling. However, from a medical perspective, your scalp needs moisture to remain healthy; without it, your scalp can become dry and flaky, leading to dandruff. Shampooing cleanses the scalp but also removes moisture and nutrients. On days when you are not shampooing, either skip washing your hair or simply rinse it with water, allowing the natural oils from your scalp to keep it moisturised.
